The therapeutic manager of Childline North West, Lourens van Niekerk, decided to raise money for the crisis line system by running the Two Oceans Half Marathon in aid of Childline North West.
Childline North West’s toll-free crisis line provides an invaluable service to children from all over the North West Province.
The crisis line is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week with trained crisis counsellors on duty to render immediate assistance to children and adults concerned about the care and well-being of children.
During the previous financial year, the automatic electronic data system recorded 18 565 calls, 433 of which were serious cases which required immediate assistance. Childline North West is an irreplaceable referral system to government departments and NGOs.
Although the crisis line is the core project of Childline (among others), it is unfortunately also the hardest to obtain funding for, as the crisis counsellors are not really visible to the public. They work long and hard hours behind the scenes to ensure the safety of our children. This is where Van Niekerk aims to make a difference by raising funds to keep the crisis line operational 24 hours a day.
‘The idea of running the Two Oceans Half Marathon for Childline North West is nerve-wracking but very exciting,’ says van Niekerk. ‘The idea is unique in the sense that this is not some external fundraiser conducted by an external person or organisation. I am doing this as an employee because I believe in my organisation. I truly believe that Childline makes a difference.’ After some jokes and discussions, Lourens van Niekerk accepted the challenge from the director of Childline North West, Mrs Alice Carnell. ‘It is time to step up to the challenge and to raise funds for this worthy cause – and this is exactly what I intend to do. It is time to train hard and to do this for children who are victims of abuse.’
Lourens secured his entry for the Two Oceans at the end of last year.
‘The challenge is now out there for the Potchefstroom community,’ says Van Niekerk. Childline North West is challenging any business, organisation or individual to sponsor Lourens for every kilometre he completes. There is no minimum amount and any interested person or business is welcome to contact Childline North West at 018 297 4411 between 08:00 and 16:30 or email Lourens at llvn@live.com. All funds raised will be allocated directly to the crisis line and a tax return certificate will be issued upon request. Childline North West is a registered NPO (NPO- 017-604).
Children experiencing a crisis can contact the toll-free crisis line at 08000 55 555 at any time.
