Potchefstroom and South Africa’s athletics queen, Caster Semenya, scooped numerous awards at the 2017 Athletics Central North West (ACNW) awards evening on Wednesday, 29 November at the NWU Sports Village.

Semenya won the grand award for ACNW Athlete of the Year, which was duly deserved after her stunning gold medal at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in the 800 metres to name just one of her spectacular achievements this year. Semenya also took home the track and field athlete of the year award. Elroy Gelant won the road running athlete of the year award and Mthobisi Baloyi took home the prestigious cross country athlete of the year award.

For years ACNW did not host an official awards ceremony and after Semenya tweeted earlier this year that she felt the province did not recognise her world-class achievements. ANCW president Jean Verster and the ACNW board then decided to honour all its athletics achievers with a proper ceremony.

Numerous special awards were given to athletes, coaches, officials and commission members who performed admirably in ACNW colours in track and field, cross country and road running disciplines.

Hennie Botha, the current chairperson for cross country at ACNW, was awarded the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for decades of service to athletics in the province.

Well-known television and radio sporting personality Arnold Geerdts was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

Read more on these awards with the full story in next Thursday’s (7 December) edition of Potchefstroom Herald.
