This week, Athletics Central North West’s top athletes received the plaudits for their outstanding achievements in the green, white and red colours of this proud athletics union.
In a first for ACNW in more than two decades, a special ceremony was held at the NWU Sports Village on Wednesday, 29 November when the top athletes across all age groups were honoured.
Caster Semenya reigned supreme as she took home the award for The ACNW Athlete of the Year and the big prize for The Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Elroy Gelant won the Road Running Athlete of the Year award and Mthobisi Baloyi took home the prestigious Cross Country Athlete of the Year award.
The year 2017 was also Semenya’s last year in Potch, having finished her Sports Science degree at the university to which she owes a lot of her recent success.
‘It has been a great journey and a superb year for me. Coach Jean (Verster) has been a fantastic mentor and I owe a lot to him. My next goal will be to set new records and focus on the 800- and 1 500 metres. My aim is to become the most decorated SA athlete,’ added Semenya.
‘It has been a fantastic year, coming second at the SA Champs that we hosted with 22 medals to our name. At the SA Cross Country Championships, we came third, too, which is fantastic. It is fitting that we host an awards ceremony for our athletics achievers this year,’ said the president of ACNW, Jean Verster.
There was another special moment when Hennie Botha, the well-known cross country coach, chairperson and administrator at ACNW, was awarded the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for decades of service and hard work. ‘All I can say is that it is God’s grace that has guided me to where I am today,’ said the humble, soft-spoken Botha upon receiving the award.
Other star achievers were Pieter Conradie, Robert de Villiers, Joné Kruger, Jana Steinmann, Kayla van der Berg and Christiaan van der Berg who each received their Track and Field Athlete of the Year awards in their respective age categories.
Carina Swiegers, Robert de Villiers, Cara du Preez, Roal Janse van Vuuren, Carli Visser, Nico Deerling and Alta Verster were chosen as the top cross country athletes in their age categories.
